Be intentionally Transparent to create Trust and Engagement

In the end, it’s what you do that counts. People first follow the person, then they follow the plan. They need to see it to believe it.

— James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner

Culture is defined by what people see, not what they are told.

While many organizations talk about “trust,” TRM achieves it by providing everyone with the opportunity to observe the organization’s performance structures in action. Intentional transparency is the catalyst that moves a team from mere compliance to deep engagement.

1. Share the Full Responsibility Matrix

In a mature TRM environment, the Mission Chain is not a secret kept by leadership. By sharing the full Responsibility Matrix, you allow every individual to see how the mission flows through the organization.

  • The Action: Ensure every team member can trace their specific link back to the ultimate mission. When people see how they support the organization’s success, their work gains immediate meaning.

2. Provide “Observation Data Points”

Consistency is the bedrock of trust. By being transparent about how responsibilities are defined and how results are governed, you provide the data points people need to see that the system is fair and logical.

  • The Rule: Transparency isn’t just about sharing good news; it’s about sharing the structure of how decisions are made and how accountability is held.

3. Translate Accountability and Alignment into Trust and Engagement

When a Mission Chain is transparent, accountability is no longer a “black box.” Because everyone can see who owns what and how those results are monitored, the “hidden agendas” of traditional hierarchy disappear.

  • The Result: This visibility translates Accountability into Trust (because the system is predictable) and Alignment into Engagement (because the individual sees they are a vital part of the whole).

When you ensure that transparency is intentional, you remove the guesswork from the culture. You aren’t asking for blind faith; you are providing a clear, visible framework that proves everyone is moving in the same direction.
